Just a brief word about the background readings on the Feudal System of Tenure in England.
The key is to recognize that no one—except the King—owned land in the sense of our modern notions.
Everybody held their lands as tenants of someone higher on the ladder to whom they owed homage, fealty & certain services or payments.
Feudalism tied you to the land, and to the Lord of that Land.
The first step out of feudalism is democratic self-government—the right to vote for the elected representatives who make the laws that govern us. No more tipping the forelock to the great Lords and Ladies of the Feudal Estate.
The second step out of feudalism is the right to own your own land free and clear of any overlord. To quote the cliché, an Englishman is the King of his own Castle, that “little Pink House for you and me” that Johnny Cougar sings about.
